O’Reilly 360 View Product Images
Product images are increasingly important in today’s e-commerce and mobile experience. O’Reilly requires high quality images for every part number supplied by suppliers. The requirements below should be followed.
- 360-degree images are preferred.
- 360-degree images must be composed of at least 24 individual stills per plane.
- The Product Manager will decide if a given part type requires a 360-degree images or standard two-dimensional images. Once established, a part type specific guideline document will be created.
- Pre-Approval is required at a part type level, before sending 360-degree images. Sample images must be submitted and approved before delivery of all 360-degree images are submitted.
- See Appendix A for more detailed specifications about O’Reilly Automotive own in-house photo studio and 360-degree images.
- If 360-degree images are not deemed necessary by the Product Manager, standard two-dimensional images are acceptable.
- Two-dimensional images have a minimum of 4 images required per part number.
- The Product Manager will collaborate with each supplier to determine the appropriate views needed for each part type, and select a view for the Primary Image. Example views: Front, Left, Right, Rear, Package, and Connector.
- O’Reilly request the suppliers send the highest quality images possible, with the minimum pixel size of 2500 pixels on the longest side (height or width) and a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
- All images must be cropped so that the subject item fills the image. Whitespace must be held to a maximum of 15 pixels of white space on each edge.
- Supported image file types include: high resolution jpg, tiff, psd, or eps in the RGB colorspace. CMYK colorspace is not supported.
- Layered files in jpg, tiff, psd, or eps format will not be accepted.
- Backgrounds must be a neutral or white tone. If the product is white in color, an off white color background is acceptable.
- Lifestyle images are only allowed if they clearly depict the intended use of the product, and aid the customer in understanding how to use the product.
- Do not include brand logos within the photos. Brand logos will already be shown in an integrated fashion with your images.
- Watermarked images are not allowed and will be rejected.
- Grayscale images or line drawings require Product Manager approval.
- Actual product images are required for all unique part numbers. Representative images must have Product Manager approval.
- If PIES cannot be delivered, an ASCII file or Excel spreadsheet is an acceptable short term substitute until a PIES delivery is available. A delivery file gives detailed instructions for the image-to-item relationship mapping.
- Supplier image names should be unique across all supplier images. Image names should be lower case alphanumeric with no spaces. All file names must include the extension. Please refer to Auto Care’s Digital Asset Best Practices document for additional details.
- Example file naming convention
- Standard images: 12345_fro.jpg
- Part number: 12345
- Image orientation: front
- 360 images: 12345_01_022.jpg
- Part number: 12345
- Plane: first, northern hemisphere
- Image Frame: 22nd
- Notes: this is the standard naming convention for a 360 image (if it was a 3D image there would be more than 1 plane)
In the event a supplier cannot provide images that meet these requirements, O’Reilly will generate the images according the guidelines and specifications above for the given part type and will charge the supplier $25 per item to create and publish the images. These images will be the sole property of O’Reilly Automotive Stores, Inc. and will not be shared back with the supplier for use on other platforms or with other customers.
Appendix A – 360-degree Photo Studio Shooting Specs
There are many studios, retailers, suppliers, and manufacturers around the world that are now creating 360 degree product photography for a better end user experience on their websites. The range of capabilities and equipment of these 360 providers may vary greatly.
O’Reilly has established our own in-house studio as well. Below are specs and settings we currently use, and which should be followed if a supplier creates their own 360-degree images or uses a third party to create them.
CAMERA SETTINGS
- ISO: 320
- F Stop: 18-22 (maximum depth of field)
- Shutter Speed: 125
- Custom White Balance: with gray card to RGB 255 white
- Bit Depth: 24
- DPI: 300
- File size: Large Fine jpeg
- 24-105mm zoom lens
BACKGROUND
- Background and surrounding area of the product should be pure white as if the product is floating. No reflections, drop shadows, or filter treatments are used on the final images.
SPINS
- Three separate rows of spins with 24 images per spin to create on spinset.
- Row angles at 10, 25 and 40 degrees
SHOOTING SURFACE
- We shoot products on a round, clear-glass, rotating table and a large rotating platform for heavier products.
- Some products may need to be suspended to show the correct orientation of the part
LIGHTING
- For each setup we use up to 6 Broncolor flash units. The number of lights used varies with each part type, product size, features, color and individual attributes of the product.
- All lights are modified with softboxes. Two flash units are used for right and left front, one flash unit is used underneath the glass pointing up through the bottom of the glass, and one flash unit is placed directly behind the product and one flash unit is directly overhead. A sixth light can be used at a low angle from the front, just to side of the camera to illuminate darker shadowy areas. This extra flash unit can be used to achieve better detail inside electrical plugs and recessed areas on the product, to better show the individual attributes.
HARDWARE
- Or DSLR cameras are mounted on a robotic swing arm to achieve the different row angles via the SpinMe software.
- All of our lights are within 1 meter in distance from the product.
- Exact centering the part on the table is critical, if not exactly in the center spin will view as wobbly.
CROPPING
- With our system, all images, in each spin, are automatically cropped to a preset of 2500 x 2500 pixels with adequate but minimal white space around all sides so that product does not go outside of the crop when spinning.
STILL PHOTOS
- Five stills are pulled from the spin to get a front, right, left, back and primary image. The primary image is usually pulled from a 25 degree angle with the product facing towards the lower left of the frame. Stills should be at least 2500 x 2500 pixels at 300 dpi.
- Additional stills can be taken, specifically for details of attributes that can serve as an “at-a-glance”, quick look for users to see details without having to spin the product. The extra still images can be tagged as Detail_1, Detail_2 and so on.
