More than 30 years in interactive product imagery

Thirty Years of Building Better Ways to Show Products

PhotoSpherix has worked with interactive product imagery since the web needed plugins to make products spin. The technology keeps changing. The purpose remains the same: help customers inspect products online.

Built to keep evolving

The story is not that we have done the same thing for 30 years.

PhotoSpherix has stayed useful because the process keeps changing. QuickTime VR gave way to Flash. Flash gave way to standards-based web viewers. Cameras gained resolution, ecommerce catalogs grew larger and product teams needed better ways to review, approve and distribute thousands of related files.

Through every change, the goal remained practical: photograph the real product clearly, make it easy to inspect and build a production system capable of delivering the imagery where it needs to go.

PhotoSpherix through the years

From Object VR to complete catalog production.

The tools changed repeatedly. Each generation taught us something about making interactive product imagery clearer, more repeatable and easier for clients to use.

1995
The beginning

Object VR and the first product rotator

Apple introduced Object VR inside QuickTime. When a client needed a rotating product shot for a trade-show video and no suitable production tool was available, we built our own product rotator and created the photography ourselves. The pattern was established early: when the product required a better process, we built one.

1999
More than a single spin

QuickTime VR and early multi-row movement

QuickTime VR Authoring Studio made interactive imaging accessible beyond Apple’s internal teams. We added multi-row functionality to our own work so viewers could move above and below the product rather than staying on one horizontal path. Product imagery began to feel less like a slideshow and more like exploration.

2004
A new delivery format

Flash viewers and the first full multi-row rig

As Flash became common in web browsers, we created a Flash-based 360 product viewer and moved interactive product photography toward a broader online audience. We also built a dedicated multi-row rig capable of photographing a product from the equivalent of the north pole to the south pole.

2005
PhotoSpherix becomes its own company

A dedicated name, space and multi-row viewer

After years of developing interactive product work within a parent company, PhotoSpherix stepped into its own name and studio space. We also completed a multi-row viewer that no longer depended on Apple’s technology, bringing our capture and presentation work into one focused business.

2008
Photography first

From viewer development back to the studio

Viewer technology was changing quickly and stronger commercial options were becoming available. Rather than continuing to compete as a software developer, PhotoSpherix stopped building its own viewer and concentrated on the photography: lighting, capture systems, product handling, repeatable production and the quality of the source imagery.

2009
Beyond the original studio

First on-location production and a larger platform

We completed our first on-location 360 photography project using a capture system that could travel to the customer. At the same time, conventional product platforms were no longer large enough for the work reaching the studio, so we built a rotation platform capable of handling room-sized furniture arrangements.

2010
Large products become mobile

A vehicle-scale rig that could travel

The large rotation platform evolved into a mobile system capable of supporting full-size vehicles and other substantial products at different locations. Multi-row experimentation also produced alternative movement paths, including T-shaped rotations designed around specific ways a product needed to be examined.

The 2010s
360 enters mainstream ecommerce

Retailer adoption and standards-based delivery

Major ecommerce and home-improvement retailers began adding interactive product imagery to their product-detail pages. Browser standards moved beyond proprietary plugins, while higher-resolution cameras and faster delivery made 360s more useful on everyday devices. PhotoSpherix continued concentrating on the source photography and the production decisions that survive changing viewers.

The 2020s
From capture to catalog workflow

Product tracking, processing, review and custom exports

As projects grew, taking the pictures became only one part of the job. PhotoSpherix developed an integrated workflow for product identification, background processing, internal quality control, online client review, approvals, change requests and channel-specific exports. Automation handles useful repetition while photographers continue making the visual decisions.

2026
More than 30 years—and still rebuilding

Four capture stations built for real production

PhotoSpherix now operates approximately 6,000 square feet in Indianapolis, Indiana, with four capture stations, large-product capability, semi access, forklift handling and proven on-site workflows. The studio photographs one-off products and full catalogs, then delivers organized imagery for ecommerce, retailers, distributors, DAM systems and PIM platforms.

What the history means today

Technology serves the photography.

PhotoSpherix is a photography studio—not a hardware or software vendor. The systems exist so products remain identified, capture stays consistent, clients can review work without email chaos and approved imagery reaches every required channel in the right structure.

The next chapter will bring more automation, better capture, faster review and new ways to reuse product imagery. The standard remains unchanged: show what the customer needs to see.
